Amy is autistic and has experienced homelessness. She attends a Creative Writing class at Crisis Coventry*. Amy wanted to create a story that would help people to understand her better, and perhaps help them to understand other people with autism too.

"My name is Amy. I live in Coventry and I am 38 years old. This is the first story I have written. I enjoyed it, it was very emotional. My confidence has improved in the last two years. I never could have written a story two years ago. The story is called Autism and Me. My friend Bengy and I discussed the contents of the story. I then typed it up at the learning hub. Once I had typed up the story, Natasha, my teacher at Crisis, helped me with the grammar and punctuation."
*Crisis is the national charity for homeless people

Gives real insights into tackling homelessness

Amy's book shows how important it is that people who are experiencing homelessness, or are at risk of homelessness, get high quality personalised support to help them address their housing situation in a way that reflects all aspects of their well-being. Congratulations to Amy on writing a book that gives real insights into tackling homelessness and tells us about her journey. I think many people will find it useful to read this book – whether people experiencing homelessness or isolation, or housing and homelessness professionals needing to understand the impact of autism.

A very proud teacher

When Amy came to us, she was experiencing serious social isolation. Amy had never written anything before but, when she started writing, it just poured out of her... I am a very proud teacher.
