Jenny's Choice By Margaret Adams

It seemed to Jenny that she had spent her whole life having to choose. But none of this helped with the choice that Jenny had to make now.

The eagerly-awaited fourth title in the brilliant Supermarket Stories series, written by Margaret Adams and illustrated by Ian Bobb.

The main intention of the series is to give Entry level students a story to read - to show them that reading can be a pleasure. However, the book can be used to practise specific learning aims, with each chapter subtly focusing on particular letter combinations and sounds:

  • Chapter 1: looks at the letter pattern 'oi'; considers words that rhyme and have the same letter pattern
  • Chapter 2: introduces the consonant blends 'gr' and 'cr'
  • Chapter 3: introduces letter pattern 'ou' and the consonant blends 'gl' and 'cl'
  • Chapter 4: looks at the letter pattern 'oa'
  • Chapter 5: introduces the consonant blend 'pl'
  • Chapter 6: explores the different sounds represented by the letters 'th'

  • A deceptively simple tale with an unravelling twist!

For me the beauty of Margaret's stories is that men who believe they can't read, find themselves finishing a chapter before realising it - and then of course wanting to continue to the end of the story. I keep coming back to the Asco stories - the words are as vivid as the pictures. Here's another deceptively simple tale with an unravelling twist! There are so many human issues to discuss - all strikingly portrayed by the characters in the Supermarket.

  • Fantastic - the best yet

This is fantastic - the best yet. Once I started, I just had to finish it.

  • The story finished with a cliff-hanger

I liked the story. The story finished with a cliff-hanger so now I want to know what will happen next!

  • I liked this story

I liked this story because it had some new words in it but I was able to follow what was happening.

  • I wanted to finish it and find out what was going to happen

This was a good story and I’m glad we read all of it. We were going to read half in the library and then finish it at home but I wanted to finish it and find out what was going to happen. I would like to read the other stories in this series.

  • A good story

This was a good story... It was a good level book for me to read because it had some new words.

  • We tried to guess what was going to happen next

This story reminded me of the stories I read in my magazine. I enjoyed reading it together with the rest of the group because we stopped at the end of each chapter and talked about what had happened and tried to guess what was going to happen next.
