21 Jun 2007 20:20

Five years ago, Marie was a single mum of three, living on benefits and barely able to read and write. Now she is studying Nursing at University.

Marie's remarkable achievement in overcoming  significant barriers to education has been recognised firstly by a NIACE award and then with a Helena Kennedy Foundation Award.

Marie has written movingly about her life and progress in her book Getting Better, published by Gatehouse. Baroness Helena Kennedy QC says of her book, it is “a fantastic book that offers encouragement to anyone who is trying to improve their life.”

Maura Buchanan, President of the Royal College of Nursing, welcomes Marie to the nursing profession - “I was caught up in and dazzled by Marie’s story. It is truly an inspirational one and, having learned of her incredible life journey, I know that she will be a real credit and welcome addition to our nursing profession.”

Look out for Marie's forthcoming feature in Woman's Weekly.
